Running for Simon

My Story

Nearly 24 years ago my Brother in Law, Simon was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. At the age of 30 this came as a huge shock to Simon and his family but he was determined to live his life to the full...having 2 amazing sons, helping to run the family business, travelling, cycling, playing cricket and much much more. He's never let this awful disease get him down and has always continued to have an amazing sense of humour. He is fundamentally the most inspirational person I've ever known due to the positivity for life he has. He's never let Parkinson's Disease define him, nor defeat him and he's not about to start now.

2 years ago however, during the first year of the pandemic Simon unfortunately suffered a fall and ended up in hospital in Stockport. During this time he started to hallucinate and became very confused. After a few weeks he was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia, which is commonly associated with the latter stages of Parkinson's Disease. This has been extremely challenging for Simon as he's now getting very paranoid and hallucinating even more. He does however continue to have good days, and lucid periods where he can continue to enjoy life.

Via multiple medical facilities Simon is now being cared for in St Andrew's Hospital in Northampton, one of the best mental health facilities in the UK. Being close to us in Northampton is great as we can see him regularly and continue to keep his spirits as high as we can. That combined with other family visits and support via facetime, he knows he's very much loved and supported.

I decided to run the London marathon for Cure Parkinson's as it's an amazing charity that is essentially looking for the cure. Everything they do is to move us closer to their goal, of finding new treatments to slow, stop or reverse the progression of Parkinson’s. Your donations will support the research that will lead to the breakthrough we all want to see.

Why the London Marathon? Well, I'm doing it for Simon. For me it's going to be hard...having only run one marathon before, I know that it takes a lot of training and even more determination to do an event like this. Determination that I can certainly learn from Simon.

I will complete it...even if I have to walk or crawl...as Simon can't!

I love you BIL x
