My Story

Would you be willing to help a child who has been diagnosed with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition and their family find some peace, fulfillment, and enjoyment during their fight? Would you be willing to help a former Make A Wish recipient of fulfilling a life-long goal of forwarding their wish? You can do both right now.

Jany Rodriguez-Ramos is partnering with Make-a-Wish UK and aiming to raise at least £2500 ($3,500USD) to fulfill her charity obligation to run the London Marathon on October 2nd, 2022.

Janytzabell Rodriguez-Ramos, is a School Adjustment Counselor for the New Bedford, Massachusetts public school system. Jany has dedicated her professional life to supporting and assisting elementary school students to identify, address, and manage challenges and limitations in their lives to improve their skills and abilities to become the best person they can. However, this professional mission almost never happened.

At the age of 1, Jany was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. She underwent extensive chemotherapy treatment at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island and spent the better part of 5 years in and out of the hospital due to ongoing complications including an infected port and fever seizures. Like many pediatric cancer patients, this took a heavy toll on Jany and her family. However, Make-A-Wish stepped in to provide a break from the appointments, treatment, and hospital visits for Jany and her family by sending them to visit Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida when Jany was 5.i

Later that year, Jany was given a clean bill of health, though she and her family experienced another scare when she began experiencing concerning symptoms at age 10 which doctors thought were potential indicators of the cancer returning. Thankfully, medical staff were able to manage the symptoms which were determined to be long-term side effects of her cancer treatment.

Running

Jany discovered running in the final year of graduate school. She ran her first marathon in May 2012. She has completed over 30 marathons which have taken her to 11 states and 2 countries. Not only will Jany’s trip to London raise important funds for Make-A-Wish UK, it will also be her last Abbott World Marathon Major which will mark the completion of a major running milestone and place Jany among marathon running’s elite around the globe.

The Abbott World Marathon Majors is a series of six of the largest and most renowned marathons in the world: Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, and New York City. For athletes across the globe, competing in an Abbott World Marathon Majors race is a significant accomplishment. Once a runner has successfully completed the six events, they earn the Six Star Finisher Certificate and Six Star Finisher Medal. To date, just over 1,200 men and women have completed this exclusive quest

Jany’s running of the London Marathon in October 2022 with the Make A Wish UK team will mark her sixth and final Abbott World Marathon Majors race as she will also be completing the Berlin Marathon a week prior. While it may seem like a more daunting task to complete 2 marathons within 1 week, the final leg will be all heart. Not only knowing that she finally is able to forward her wish to others battling a childhood severe illness, but dedicated to all those who have been affected by cancer.

Make A Wish UK

Right now, around 63,000 children in the UK are eligible for a wish because they have a life-limiting or life-threatening condition. From the moment they are diagnosed, the simple pleasures of childhood and family life are replaced by worry, disruption, medical appointments, financial worriesand isolation.

Make-A-Wish exists to put those issues to one side by empowering a child with the chance to choose a wish that's unique to them, when so much else has been decided for them because of their health needs. In doing so, a wish creates hope, happiness and memories for the whole family to cherish. When a wish is granted, it inspires a child to believe that anything is possible and it helps to restore some of the childhood that they missed out on because treatment for their condition interrupted school or typical family activities. A wish broadens horizons and is something to look forward to during tough times. More than that, a wish provides respite and distraction, helps family bonding and wellbeing, inclusion and social engagement. A wish is more than a moment in a child’s life – it fills the days, monthsand years afterwards. Alongside joy, hope and happy memories sits a new confidence, resilience and self-worth.
