My Story

Five years ago whilst on a challenge to cycle up Mont Ventoux three times in a day for the Club des Cinglés honour I had a simple fall during which I cracked my rib but unknown to me at the time also suffered a head injury.

Three weeks later whilst visiting family in Boston USA I started getting symptoms of leg weakness and within a week I went off my legs and had to be admitted to Massachusettes General Hospital where I was diagnosed with a massive brain bleed. I had a bilateral craniotomy to drain the large sub-dural haematoma. Following this I had to have intensive rehab. Since then I have developed an interest in brain function and research.

I have done two London marathons in my younger days and have always felt that I had another marathon in me. Inspired by the 100 year old marathon runner Fauja Singh I have embarked on this challenge to run the TCS London Marathon 2022. When choosing a charity Brain Research UK was a natural choice. This is my way of putting something back into the wonderful clinicians around the world that are involved in cutting edge brain research.

In terms of running, I have embarked on a beginners schedule and hope that despite two recent injuries - a pulled right calf and a pulled left hamstring - I shall remain on course to finish the marathon.

I am very fortunate that in this endeavour I am being joined by my wife - Val. She has never run a marthon before but has done some half marathons many years ago. Val also has an interest in brain research as her mother has dementia, a cruel disease with worsening incidence in an ageing population.

Together we shall be making every effort to train for and complete this challenge. Thank you all for the support you have given us both. To get regular updates visit https://gsingh1015.wordpress.com
